Hand Embroidery : French Knot

The French Knot is a small and raised knot formed on the fabric’s surface. It is a decorative hand embroidery stitch.

French knots are versatile and can be used in various kinds of embroidery designs. It is commonly used to add texture, dimension and detail to embroidery designs, such as creating small dots and filling in tiny areas.

How to execute french knot :

  1. START : Insert the needle from the back of the fabric to the front, at the desired location. This is the starting point for your knot.

2. WRAP THE THREAD : Hold the needle with your less preferred hand and wrap the thread around the needle a (few or) 3 times, depending on the desired size of the knot. The more wraps you make, the larger the knot will be and the less wraps you make, the smaller the knot will be.

3. HOLD THE WRAPS : While, still holding the wraps in place with your less preferred hand, carefully insert the needle back into the fabric close to where it came out and ensure that the wraps stay in place and do not loosen.

4. FORM THE KNOT : Now, pull the thread gently to form a tight knot on the fabric’s surface.

5. FINISH : Trim any excess thread on the fabric, leaving a small tail if necessary.

you can adjust the number of wraps to achieve the desired size and appearance of the knot.
