Hand Embroidery : Split Stitch

The Split Stitch is a versatile and essential stitch in embroidery, it creates a smooth and continuous line of stitches in embroidery.

It is commonly used for outlining, it can also be used for filling areas and creating texture in embroidery.

By changing the length and spacing of the stitches, you can achieve different effects and add depth to your designs.

The split stitch is characterized by small stitches that split as the needle passes through the fabric. This creates a continuous line with a braided or twisted appearance.

How to execute split stitch :

1. START : Bring the needle up through the fabric at the starting point of your stitch.

2. FIRST STITCH : Insert the needle back into the fabric a short distance ahead of the starting point, creating the first stitch.

3. SPLIT THE STITCH : Again, bring the needle up through the fabric, splitting the previous stitch in half as the needle passes through the center of the stitch.

4. REPEAT : Continue this process, splitting each stitch as you work your way along the line.

5. END : To end the split stitch, after reaching the end point of your line bring the needle down through the fabric and secure the thread on the back of the fabric with a knot.

It requires precision and control, for achieving a neat and uniform split stitch. Ensure that each stitch is evenly spaced and split in the center, creating a continuous line with smooth curves and sharp corners.

Split stitch is ideal for outlining shapes and adding fine details with a neat and precise appearance.
