Hand Embroidery : Stem Stitch

The stem stitch is a classic hand embroidery stitch and able to create different kinds of effects in embroidery.

It is commonly used for creating smooth, rope – like line appearance and it is also ideal/suitable for outlining shapes, adding text or decorative details & in making curves in embroidery designs.

How to execute stem stitch :

  1. START : Bring the needle up, from the back side of the fabric at the desired starting point. This will holds the thread in place.

2. FIRST STITCH : STEP – 1 : Insert the needle back into the fabric, a short distance ahead of the starting point & do not pull the whole thread, leaving a loop of thread on the surface. STEP – 2 : Bring the needle up through the fabric, halfway between the starting and ending point of the first stitch.

3. SECOND STITCH : STEP – 1 : Bring the needle down through the fabric at the end of the first stitch, forming a diagonal line. STEP – 2 : Then apply the same process as used in first stitch, to complete the second stitch.

4. REPEAT THIS PROCESS by continue doing these steps & ensure that each stitch should be work in the one direction, following the curve of your line.

5. END POINT : After reaching the end point of your desired line, then secure the thread on the back of the fabric.

It is named for its traditional use in outlining stems and roots in floral motifs.

Stem Stitch produces a continuous line with a twisted appearance that look – like a rope or cord.

With the practice of stem stitch, you can achieve beautiful, smooth or continuous lines & small pattern details in your embroidery designs.
