Hand embroidery : Chain Stitch

The chain stitch is having ‘ high quality ‘ and ‘ value ‘ because it has a traditional style and capable of creating many different embroidery effects.

It is characterized by a series of loops that create a linked chain – like pattern of interconnected circles.

The chain stitch is commonly used for outlining shapes, creating borders, filling areas and adding decorative elements which which creates an attractive effects in embroidery designs.

How to execute chain stitch :

  1. STARTING POINT : From the back side of the fabric, bring the needle up at the desired starting point.
  2. FIRST STITCH : STEP – 1 : Insert the needle back into the fabric at the same point, but do not pull the thread, leaving a loop of thread on the surface. STEP – 2 : Again, bring the needle up through the fabric, a short distance away from the starting point, inside the loop formed by the previous stitch and pull the thread through the fabric, to create a new loop.
  3. Now, Repeat this process to form a continuous chain of loops.
  4. ENDING POINT : To end the chain stitch, secure the last loop with a small holding stitch and bring the needle to the back of the fabric to tie off the thread.

Chain Stitch can be worked in a straight line or curved path and the length & spacing of the loops can be different to achieve different kind of effects.

You can use chain stitch with different techniques, by experimenting it into your embroidery designs in unique & innovative ways.

It is one of the most important stitch for embroiderers of all skill levels.
