Hand Embroidery : Running Stitch

    The running stitch is one of the simplest embroidery stitch. It have the quality of giving straight, evenly spaced stitches that run along a line.

    Running Stitch is also able to create many different embroidery effects and can be used for gathering fabric, adding texture, creating decorative borders and for loose temporary sewing stitch.

    The running stitch is a quick and less time consuming embroidery stitch.

    How to execute running stitch :

    1. STARTING POINT : From the back side of the fabric, bring the needle up at the starting point of your stitch.
    2. FIRST STITCH : Insert the needle back into the fabric a short distance ahead of the starting point, creating the first stitch.
    3. SECOND STITCH : Again, bring the needle up through the fabric, from the last stitch that you have made take a short distance ahead. Insert it back into the fabric.
    4. Now, continue doing this process in a straight line or along a desirable location & ensure that each stitch is of the same size/length and spaced evenly along the line you are stitching.
    5. ENDING POINT : After reaching the end point of your line, bring the needle down through the fabric at the end of your last stitch & secure the thread on the back of the fabric with a knot or by weaving it through nearby stitches.

The running stitch is a traditional embroidery stitch that has been used for centuries and it is also suitable for modern designs.

By adjusting the length and spaces of the stitches you can achieve different effects –

SHORTER STITCHES : It will create a close or denser appearance.

LONGER STITCHES : It will give a more open look.

It’s a great stitch for beginners to learn hand embroidery.
