Hand Embroidery: Back Stitch

The back stitch is a reliable stitch that provides excellent control and precision, It is a simple and able to create many different effects in hand embroidery, it also creates a solid and continuous line of stitches.

It is commonly used for outlining shapes, adding text and creating fine details in embroidery designs.

How to execute back stitch :

  1. START : From the backside of the fabric, bring the needle up at the starting point of your stitch.
  2. FIRST STITCH : Insert the needle back into the fabric a short distance ahead, creating the first stitch.
  3. SECOND STITCH : Bring the needle up through the fabric again at the starting point, then insert it back into the fabric at the end of the first stitch, and bring it up through the fabric a short distance ahead of the previous stitch.
  4. Repeat and continue stitching in this process for each subsequent stitch.
  5. END : To finish the back stitch, bring the needle down through the fabric at the end of your last stitch and secure the thread on the back of the fabric.

The back stitch produces a neat & even line of stitches on the front of the fabric. It gives a series of stitches visible on the back side of the fabric.

Adjusting the length of your stitches can give you different effects –

Shorter Stitches will create a smoother line, while

Longer Stitches will give a dashed effect.

This stitch is suitable for both beginner and experienced embroiderers.
